Legend has it that King Nebuchadnezzar II built these gardens as a gift for his queen, Amytis, who came from Persia and found the Mesopotamian plain too monotonous and treeless. To please her, the king decided to create a hanging garden, a veritable oasis suspended between heaven and earth. The Gardens of Babylon consisted of a series of overlapping terraces, connected by stairs and a complex network of canals and irrigation pipes.
